Das Surfboard
Für den Anfänger sorgt in der Regel ein langes, breites und dickes Brett schon nach einigen Versuchen für viel Spaß. Wozu hingegen die fortgeschrittenen Surfer zum Shortboard greifen, welches aufgrund der kleinen Grösse eine bessere Wendigkeit und Manövrierfähigkeit hat. Die Größe eines Surfbrettes wird üblicherweise in Feet (Fuß) und Inch (Zoll) angegeben.

Das Longboard
Der Gigant unter den Surfboards. Das klassische Longboard ist mit einer Länge zwischen 9´0´´ und 10´0´´ einer Breite von 22´´und mit 3´´ bis 4´´ Dicke das größte Brett auf dem Wasser. Die Größe und das hohe Volumen ermöglicht sehr frühes Anpaddeln und Angleiten und eine sehr hohe Stabilität – dafür ist man allerdings nicht so wendig und schnell unterwegs. Historisch gesehen wurden bis in die 1960er Jahre ausschließlich Longboards gesurft.
Die Gun
Eine Sonderform ist die sogenannte Gun, die eine Länge von 7´ bis ca. 12´ aufweisen. Sie sind spitz und schlank gestaltet und werden in großen Wellen verwendet. Die geringe Breite ermöglicht hohe Geschwindigkeiten, und aufgrund ihrer Länge liegen sie auch bei viel Speed stabil im Wasser.
Der Funshape
Der Funshape ist die Boardart, die man am häufigsten in Surfschulen sieht. Die Form ähnelt dem Longboard, ist aber mit einer Länge zwischen 7´4´´ und 8´6´´ kürzer, die Breite liegt meist zwischen 20´´ und 22´´. Innerhalb der Funshapes gibt es auch noch verschiedene Formen, die häufigste ist jedoch das „Minimalibu“. Die Handhabung ist „leichter“ als mit dem Longboard, aber die Funshapes weisen ähnliche Gleit- und Paddeleigenschaften aus.
Das Evolution
Evolution Boards sind für Anfänger gedacht, um den Einstieg auf Shortboards zu erleichtern. Sie sind von der Form her dem Shortboard ähnlich, sind aber breiter, länger und haben mehr Volumen.
Das Shortboard
Das Shortboard hat in der Regel eine Länge zwischen 5´6´´ und 7´, ist ca. 17-19 Inches breit und hat eine Dicke von 2-3 Inches. Das geringe Volumen ist die Ursache für den geringen Auftrieb - das Brett lässt sich dadurch schwerer anpaddeln bzw. man erwischt die Welle erst später.
Der Fish / Egg
Ein kurzes Brett mit einer Breite von ca. 20´´. Trotz der geringen Länge hat das Fishboard aufgrund seiner dicken Rails ein hohes Volumen und gleitet somit ebenfalls früh an. Das Brett ist Ideal für kleinere Wellen und fortgeschrittene Surfer.
